It is so easy to get caught in this trap and indeed it became an obsession of mine when I first started using social networks for business. Constantly checking follower numbers – “How many followers do I have?”, “How many people unfollowed me today?”, “How can I get more followers?”


It Is Not Important

Please do not misunderstand me, having followers is essential. If you don’t have any followers then posting content is irrelevant but the quality of your followers is much more important than the number you have.

I have mentioned before in a previous blog post about interacting with your fans and followers and it is this which is much more important. Unless you are engaging with your fans, having conversations, having your information shared with others then you are wasting the opportunities which social networking can bring to your business.


Talk To Your Followers

If you are finding it difficult to engage with your followers then you need to be pro-active in the process. Post questions rather than statements. Share content which does not directly relate to your own website. As an example, for The Diving Register I share more tweets from other scuba diving websites than my own. Why do I do this? It gives my followers access to much more scuba diving information than The Diving Register has and it confirms the fact that I am active in the scuba industry. I follow industry news and I am willing to share it. I even share content from my competitors. This may seem strange but because more of my tweets and posts are unbiased it actually results in more people wanting to read what I have to say.


Telling Is Not Selling

Don’t use your tweets and posts to constantly bombard your fans with deals, offers and ways to give you money. Become an authority in the scuba industry. Show that you are the most¬†knowledgeable about scuba in your area. Show you know more about the dive sites, the wildlife and local surroundings. As soon as people start to trust your posts based on your knowledge they will come to you for courses or trips. You will not need to sell anything. Your knowledge and experience will do it for you without you ever needing to beg for sales through your social feeds.


Try Making A Change

Try doing a little bit of what I have suggested and your follower count will grow naturally, you will generate more traffic to your website when you do post a link, an offer or a dive package and you will start to get more people sharing your content, tweeting your name and engaging with you.
